WE LOVE THE 80's Dance!

Kaleb took me to his school's Mother-Son Dance for the second year in a row and we had SO much fun!  He's at the perfect age where he gets really excited about things and I just love him for it. We worked on our outfits all week and practiced our moves with the wii dance for kids & at the daddy-daughter dance I helped with for Activity Days. By the night of our big date, we were ready!

You can't really see it in the pictures, but I did the wing on one side & a tiny claw clip on the other side.  I was tempted to cut bangs & do bangs to heaven & cut steps into the sides of K's hair, but decided not to go through with it. I mean we're crazy, but we're not THAT crazy! I did paint my nails neon blue & buy jelly bracelets for us.
The highlight was dancing with my boy and going to Yogurt Jungle afterward. I taught him and a friend the Thriller dance when it came on and another mom friend asked if I was a cheerleader in high school afterward....HA! When we weren't dancing, he was playing tag with his little friends. I was happy he was wearing such bright clothes & D's light up glasses...he was always easy to find. It was a night I'll always remember.

Our LOVELY Valentine's

We had a lot of fun celebrating our love as a family this year.  I think this is one of our favorite holidays. The little ones and I met Ben for a middle of the day date while K was at school. That night I made heart shaped pizzas with veggies & heart ice in our strawberry crush soda. We also made jello jigglers...the kids LOVE them!

Sunday we made a fancier dinner and ate by candlelight.  Ben grilled a london broil and asparagus.  I made salad and twice baked potatoes to go along with it.  The kids helped me dip some strawberries for dessert. We always have a nice Valentine's FHE on the love of our Savior & talk about the scripture: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, which I have printed a special way to write out Valentine. We also had a lot of fun making Valentines for each other, our far away family, and school mates.

Ben & I gave each other new backpacks for our Havasupai trek in May.  I wrote little love notes all over it...I love you to Havasupai & back, Honeymooners, etc.  We gave the kids a heart box of chocolates,  K a new Calvin & Hobbes book, D a new Waldo book, & Ruby a Dora hair set. We also gave them Just Dance for Kids on the wii...oh yeah!

The Grandparents Came

My parents came for a visit during Kaleb's spring break and to celebrate their March birthdays.  They were here for 10 days and we packed in the fun! Since I don't like lugging around our nice camera this post will have to be edited with more pics once I get ahold of my mom's. Back to the break....

The day they flew in, we went to Valle Luna for our fav. Mexican food, then to K's first night game.  IT WAS FREEZING!  Really windy and we were frigid by the end.  K's team lost, but he did great.  He played goalie for the first time and had some good plays.

The next day I had to teach art at Pathway in the morning and so my parents watched D & Ruby.  They went to a park and played while I worked, then we packed up the fishing gear and went to Pacana Park. After K's school we took the kids fishing and let them play for a couple of hours. The weather was perfect and we all had a good time, but no luck on any fish.  We met Ben for Barro's that night.

Friday we took K out of school a little early and headed to the zoo.  We met up with Aunt Michele, Nikki, and her 3 little boys, Jayce, Ryder & Jaxon. We had the best time catching up with them and it was another perfect weather day.  We timed it so we got there after lunch and the zoo was practically empty.  We saw the orangutans swinging and the mama cuddling her baby. They also swung on a little rope swing in a circle and did tricks for us.  So cool!  We also saw the giraffes up close and the baboons.  We let the kids play a lot at the cavern, the carousel, and the playhouse before we left four hours later.

From there we went to Uncle Rog's after the zoo.  The kids played with TJ, Lily and Taylor while Uncle Rog, Aunt Judy, Tim, Jenny, my parents, Ben & I went to Matta's.  Matta's is our family tradition.  Every time we came to AZ we would always end up at Matta's & I'd always get the same thing: chix chimi with green sauce and a strawberry crush. Now I order a Sandy's Special with a DP and I'm pretty sure I out ordered everyone. :)

Saturday we took it easy and did a few things around the house that morning.  Mom and I worked out, I ran 6 miles. After Ruby's nap, we went to AZ Mills mall. Mom & I shopped a little (KID FREE SHOPPING WITH MY MOM) while the kids, Ben & Dad went to the aquarium. The kids loved it!  We did, too. Then we headed to Pei Wei's.  Ruby ate with chopsticks to the amazement of all around us.

Sunday we went to church and Mom helped me in nursery.  Girls Club took naps and afterward we all headed to the park.  Dad rode the little ones on the bike while Mom and I walked to keep up.  It was cute.  The kids looked for beebees and we played some soccer. That night we made coconut shrimp, cilantro rice, and grilled veggies.  YUM!

Monday we relaxed in the morning (and by relax, I mean Mom, Dad & I took turns working out) then picked up lunch and headed to the park.  We went to a matinee of The Lorax and it was so cute!  We all loved it and Ruby lasted the whole time and danced at the end.  Ben & Dad went to the Suns game and had a great time.  Our friend, Marc had amazing tickets he couldn't use, and they sat right behind the Timberwolves bench.  Our old Blazer favs, Rick Adelman and Terry Porter, were coaching and we got to see Ben & Dad in the crowd.  They had a great time!  Mom & I got the kids to bed and caught up on Smash.

Tuesday we went to Mango's and our fav. old bookstore.  We met Ben & Uncle Rog there and ate outside.  We then headed back to Uncle Rog's to visit. The kids got to play with Ayden and had a fun time.

The next day we packed lunches, snacks and backpacks and headed to South Mountain. We hiked Telegraph Pass together and had a great time. We went all the way to the stone house and saw lots of skaters going down the curvy roads.  We saw a few lizards, a hang glider and great views of Maricopa and downtown Phoenix.  It's a pretty steep hike and I'm proud of my boys for doing it with a smile on their faces. Ruby fell asleep in the pack on the way down, so we ended up driving through McD's instead of having our picnic.

Thursday morning before a creature was stirring, Ben & I snuck away for an overnight trip to San Diego to celebrate our anniversary a little early. Mom & Dad watched the kids for us. We decided to fly since it was for such a short time and we made it there by 9 or so, and had breakfast at the Original Pancake House. I ordered pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream and it was DELISH! I think there was an entire pound of fresh strawberries on top. Ben had some type of skillet egg dish that was also yummy.

It was overcast and our room wasn't ready yet, so we headed to a nearby mall.  We decided to go to a matinee and saw This Means War with Reese Witherspoon.  It was the perfect date movie: action, romance, cute people to look at, and a fun ending.  Loved it!  I really loved being there with my hubby in the middle of the day & the middle of the week.  How often do you get to do that? We then headed to the beach and went on a nice, long walk.  I bought Ruby a pair of black, glittery TOMS that are so cute!  We checked into our room in the late afternoon and just relaxed and tried out the jacuzzi tub. The bathroom was bigger than our master bedroom and the tub was almost the size of a real hot tub.  They even had a tv in the bathroom so you could soak and watch your shows.  It was really nice!  Afterward we walked again along the boardwalk and ate at World Famous. I had the BEST clam chowder I've ever had. It was the perfect consistency and peppery, which I loved. I ordered a fire type steak with grilled veggies and we had brie as an appetizer.  We were pretty tired from our super early morning, so we just headed back to the hotel and crashed.

The next morning we slept in a bit, and then I ran 9 miles along the Pacific Ocean.  It was AWESOME!  It was overcast and a bit misty, but the nice fresh air felt wonderful.  I had Ben's iphone with the Nike app to track my mileage and Pandora to keep me company while Ben sat poolside and did some school work.  I saw a girl I know from Phoenix while I was running and didn't stop, I knew if I did, I wouldn't be able to start up again.  I felt really good the whole time until the last few miles.  I ran most of it on a boardwalk, but there were still dips here and there.  I ended up landing on one of the dips wrong and felt a muscle near my achilles tear.  I was at 7 miles then and decided it wasn't too bad, so I kept going.  I ran for about half a mile more and then decided to run on the beach.  My left knee was hurting at this point as well, so I thought the change might do me good.  It did, kind of, but the last mile was a little painful.  When you run on the hard packed sand, it's always at an incline sloping toward the sea.  Not so great on the joints after all.  Anyway, it was exhilarating to run that far, and if my stupid knee & muscle weren't hurt, I felt stamina-wise I could have kept going.  Now I think I'll work myself up to a half marathon before I take the summer off.  Ben had the jacuzzi ready for me after my run and it felt so good! Hot tub, cold water, and raisinets for a breakfast of champions. :)

After we checked out, we walked along the beach and went to Joe's Crab Shack for lunch.  It was so fun!  When we walked in, you immediately go upstairs to the hostess area, and our table had an amazing view of the ocean.  Our waitress told us the dolphins were jumping, and I thought, how on earth can you see that from here?  About 5 minutes later we spotted them...it was awesome!  Probably one of my favorite parts of the trip.  It was amazing to see with my own eye balls and to see how close they were to the surfers.  Ben had lobster and crab and I tried some of each. I had crab cake caesar salad.

That afternoon we headed to the Gas Lamp district and walked around.  We went to the mall and I got a cute T & hoodie. We also got some candy for everyone back home.  The huge gummy snakes were a total hit with the kids. Ben looked for a hat, but didn't find anything.  We ended our trip at Ciro's pizza. It's a place we found with the boys a few years ago. It's just a hole in the wall place that serves NY pizza by the slice. It's thin and crispy crust is amazing & I got a piece with tomato, basil & fresh mozzarella.  Are you wondering how much weight I gained over the 10 days? Don't ask!  We did some people watching, magazine flipping, and just enjoyed every minute of our getaway.

Saturday Mom & I went on a long walk and then we headed to town to drop them off.  Dad mentioned he'd never been to a Rubio's, so we went there and my folks tried their first fish tacos.  K's comment: Mexican again?!?

It was a fun break, but I'm still trying to catch up around here a week later.  Thanks for everything, Mom & Dad.  We had so much fun and Ruby's still talking about her papa. :)
